Masland Educational Counseling - Grade 11
Educational Planning for High School Juniors
Junior year can be a very demanding time for high school students. SAT and ACT testing is generally done during junior year, which frequently means test prep classes, along with scheduling the subject tests and AP exams where applicable. School pressures ramp up and often a student can feel overwhelmed. Masland Educational Consulting will work with your student to provide guidance and timelines to take some of the stress out of this hectic year. We meet with our students a minimum of once a month throughout junior year, although some students prefer to meet more frequently, which we are happy to do.

Taking a Positive Approach
Using questionnaires, interviews, and other assessment tools, we help your student understand his/her unique abilities and interests. Focusing on your student’s strengths creates a positive foundation for both the junior year and the college search.

Junior Year Sessions include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Student and parent questionnaires
  • Interview with student and parents concerning goals and objectives
  • Advice on letters of recommendation
  • Guidance on high school course selection
  • Overview of admissions process
  • Review of standardized and targeted testing
  • Timeline of junior year
  • Planning college visits utilizing Masland Educational Consulting's "Smart Steps" Touring Guidebook
  • Showing demonstrated interest

Ideally college planning should begin in the spring before junior year. There are a host of activities and test prep classes offered during the summer, and getting a jump on these opportunities will make junior year much more manageable.

End of Junior Year
Planning before senior year is critical. This is the last opportunity to ensure that your student is fully ready for the college application process!
  • Sign up for an Essay Workshop
  • Schedule 8 - 10 meetings over the summer
  • Optimize summer activities
  • Review major selection by school
  • Testing status update
  • Meet with family to review final college list
